NDADD In The Beginning
Before 1986, dance team in North Dakota was growing into a full-fledged sport in many towns, but there wasn't a statewide organization to pull the teams together. In the first few years of competition, the team that won hosted the next year's competition, but could not compete.
In the late 1970's, Carol Turner, a prominent Oklahoma dance instructor, hosted dance clinics in several states, including North Dakota. One of Carol's employees was Cindy Clough, who formed her own company - Just for Kix of Brainerd, Minnesota, in 1981. Cindy continued to host Just For Kix dance clinics in North Dakota, including a pivotal clinic in Steele in 1986. Cindy encourged North Dakota coaches and teams to form an official organization modeled after Minnesota's dance team association. Cindy was a wealth of information for our fledgling organization, a North Dakota judge for many years, and continues to be a mentor to NDADD and many of our members.
Out of the seed that Cindy planted that day in Steele, a new organization was born. North Dakota coaches signed the charter to form the North Dakota Association of Dance and Drill in 1986. The first NDADD sponsored competition was held in February 1987 at Jamestown High School.
From a meager beginning, NDADD has grown in size and scope to become a professional organization still focused on its mission: to promote the sport of dance team in North Dakota.
